A week ago members of a megachurch heard some shocking news…their beloved pastor had abruptly resigned. The reason? Moral failure. The revelation rocked me. I had talked to this minister personally, devoured his monthly devotionals, and considered him one of the best communicators of the gospel. The previous week I had listened to one of his powerful messages on the tragedy of David committing adultery with Bathsheba. I didn’t know that a volcano was erupting in his world.

This tragedy bombarded my mind for days. I’ve prayed for him, his family, and the congregation left with feelings of betrayal. I prayed that none would walk away from the infallible truth of the Gospel because of a fallible man. I remembered a dream I had years ago. Satan ordered his imps to target the “generals” in God’s Army…wipe them out and in so doing, many would be disillusioned and drop out of the battle.

This is warfare. This is why we must be ever vigilant, “keeping our eyes on the Author and Finisher of our faith.” My father loved to quote this verse: “He who thinks he stands, take heed lest you fall.”

We must constantly examine our own lives to see if we are in the faith. We must ask ourselves the tough questions: Does my “walk” match my “talk?” Am I a hypocrite in any area of my life? What are the “planks” in my eye? Is there unconfessed sin in my life? Am I praying diligently for my spiritual leaders that they will not yield to temptation? Do I have a heart of humility, love, and gentleness toward those who have fallen, recognizing that apart from God’s grace, it could be me?

I’ve been examining my own heart the last few days…asking myself these tough questions. This has kept me busy and at the foot of the Cross. “Now unto Him who is able to keep us from falling.”
