Seeking Advice

March 30, 2014

I admit I love dispensing advice. It’s always my desire to share what I’ve learned from making wise and foolish decisions so others don’t have to pay the tuition. But it occurred to me today that there’s a downside to giving advice based on my experiences. I’m looking through the lens of my life not yours. Your circumstances, capability, and choices are different than mine.

Yes, the Bible says that “in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” It’s wise to get another opinion, but make sure you have soaked the concern in much prayer, totally dependent on God for His viewpoint. Once He speaks, stop asking. Move forward in faith. His advice won’t backfire.

My Daughter

March 28, 2014

Last Sunday I got a surprise call from Pastor Lewis. He and his wife gave me the privilege of living with them when I first moved to Washington, DC. I ended up staying for several years. (It’s hard to turn down a home-cooked meal every evening.) He was calling to share some important information with me. At the end of the conversation I said, “Thank you so much for telling me about this.” He said in response, “Why wouldn’t I, you’re my daughter.

That touched me. All the years I’ve known him that was the first time I recalled him telling me “you’re my daughter.” I thought about it all day. He sees me as his daughter. So does God. I am His daughter and why wouldn’t He think of me and keep me posted on all that would be beneficial to me and make sure I don’t miss anything that’s due me?

Now I gladly rest and revel in that reality. Always His. God always gives His Best to those who leave the choice to Him. I trust you Father.

What If?

What if Mary had second-guessed Gabriel’s mind-blowing news that she had been favored by God to be the mother of His son? Mary asked one question and then said in Luke 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant. Be it unto me according to your Word.”

We have no record of her stress level going up after the revelation or that she pondered such questions as: What are my parents going to say?  How will Joseph respond? He will never believe what happened. How do I explain it so he doesn’t break the engagement? What if he does when I start showing? And… what will the neighbors think? I can only imagine.

But we do have a record of God taking care of every minute detail. Yes, Joseph did consider breaking the engagement when he found out about the pregnancy, but the angel cleared Mary’s name and shared God’s plan with Joseph.

Whatever God starts, He finishes. If He made a promise, He will fulfill it. We don’t need to troubleshoot for God. Reduce the stress. Let God be God. He has a great track record. Zero losses.

Seizing the Moment

March 4, 2014

I was watching the Oscars Sunday night when host Ellen DeGeneres asked who wanted to join her in a selfie that is now the most shared tweet ever…more than two million times. Hollywood royalty jumped up to join in the photo (Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt and others) but so did Junior. He is prominently in the photo. Who is Junior? He’s not an A list or B list actor for that matter but the brother and escort of the best supporting actress winner Lupita Nyong’o. She’s in the selfie too, but her brother got more face time. How did this happen?

Junior said in an interview, “When Ellen invited us to join her for the selfie I saw this as an opportunity of a lifetime…the chance to be in this selfie with Ellen and the others.” I remember watching him Sunday night, enthusiastically, without hesitation, run to position himself in the shot. Ellen didn’t limit her call to Hollywood’s famous. Because Junior heard Ellen’s invitation to anyone in the room, he quickly responded, and got a prized slot among the rich and famous.

You can’t be mad at Junior. He’s the one “nobody” in the shot, but he’s in it because he answered the call quickly.

Jesus also made a nonexclusive call: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”  Are you still sitting or are you running enthusiastically into his arms to experience the deal of a lifetime?

Junior is an inspiration to me to seize every opportunity God gives me with enthusiasm.
